Organizational History

Bridge to Independence, Inc. (BTI) began as a community based, grassroots organization comprised of concerned citizens, community churches and members from the original sponsoring agencies: East Suburban Christian Pantry Network (ESCPN); Good Shepherd Social Ministry Center and Wilkinsburg Interfaith Shared Housing (WISH).  These agencies were active in the community providing emergency shelter, affordable housing, a food pantry system, clothing and rental assistance.  They also provided counseling and technical assistance with the community.

BTI began in the fall of 1985 in response to concerns for single parents, the homeless and poor in Braddock and surrounding areas.  Subsequently, the ESCPN organized a meeting of social service agencies involved in housing in the east suburbs of Allegheny County.  The concept of bridge/transitional housing for single female heads of households surfaced and was listed as the most important issue for housing needs in this area.  An assessment of needs and resources was then facilitated through ESCPN.  Technical assistance for development of Debra House, our flagship program, was provided through Action Housing, Inc.
